Earth Forces Battleship Gungnir

United Earth Government Battleship, UES Gungnir


Normally I give a lot of attention to the mass-produced ships of various class and size. This ship stands alone as the most powerful vessel in the system until the arrival of Fafnir. The "Spear of Odin" was built by Dio Industries for the Earth Navy and its direct firepower is greater than that found in most fleets fielded by the L-3/MORGAN Alliance. Her escorts would consist primarily of older ships and transports, the few notable exceptions being several Brochus-class assault transports and the Blackmore Juggernauts, the UES Concordia and her sister ship, the UES Britannia. For the majority of the war, Gungnir is assigned to defend Earth Orbit. After the battle of the Space Fortress Tomino, Gungnir's fleet advances to Mars and fights alongside Fafnir at the battle of Phobos. During the Battle, Gungnir provides protection for the Blackmores as they land their legions on the surface of the Red Planet. The ground forces blast their way to the major Martian anti-orbit installations, Brochi providing heavy support for gunships and landers bringing battalion after battalion of loyalist soldiers and vehicles. They say the skies of Mars were as red as the land that day, the air reeking of smoke, ashes and the blood of traitors.

Earth Forces cruisers have formidable weaponry. Gungnir's secondary weapons are as powerful as two of the next largest fleet ship(the UES Montana, a heavy cruiser), her main weapons consists of three massive turrets, each capable of destroying a fully-shielded cruiser in one volley. Together they could set Deucalion ablaze, but the two ships would never meet in battle as the latter leaves with the L-3 exodus fleet. Gungnir must instead settle for the lesser MORGAN vessels while Fafnir steals most of the glory. Her greater accolades wouldn't come for another generation, during the war with the genetically engineered Myu.

This ship is something of a tribute to the Battlestars albeit without the carrier angle and larger in scale. As many already know, I really enjoyed BSG and suffice it to say that I think it is a shame Syfy cancelled Caprica and the other BSG proto-series prematurely. That whole channel annoys me with it's policy of Science Fiction playing a backseat to everything else(pro-wrestling...really?) but I'm sure the internets have already gone into this from every conceivable angle. For my part, I'll just try to keep some part of the aesthetic alive in the works I do, even if it is only as one influence among many. Not much else any of us can do really.

Looking around on DA gives me hope, Sci-Fi is alive and well here ^___^
